When I arrived in the Faroe Islands for a spot of backpacking, hiking and watching football, I decided to spend my first few nights on Vagar Island. I opted to stay in the village of Sørvágur which has a population of just over 1,000 people.

The village of Sorvagur is also handily situated down a hill from the airport. The area has a few options including the Hotel Vagar (which is at the airport and a tad isolated) and some Guesthouses that are often un-named and not well promoted. I found out about the Guesthouse Hugo online, via the Make Travel website and booked in here for three nights. It’s the perfect place to stay on Vagar Island and here are six cool reasons why you should pick it.

1.Friendly Family Run Business
I met the owners Maria and Kent and their daughter who plays for the Faroe Islands ladies youth team. The owners are very friendly and have created an immaculate family-run business here in the Faroe Islands.

2.Superb Location
Guesthouse Hugo is superbly situated on the harbour in the village of Sorvagur. The view out my window was amazing. The Faroe Islands are a beautiful place. You are also only 20 minutes brisk walk from the airport and less than 10 minutes from a bus stop that can take you all the way to Torshavn. I liked the tranquility of this place and the location is more than cool.

It was also a perfect base for the day hikes to Sorvagsvatn Lake and Gasadalur. After a few nights here I headed to Torshavn to stay in the Hotel Foroyar.

3.Fast WiFi
I know, I know we are not here in the Faroe Islands to sit on our computers, but when the sun sets and the views have gone it is dark and there’s not much to do. It’s nice to know we can put our photos from the day on Instagram – Jonnydontstopliving or Facebook – Don’t Stop Living and keep touch with family and friends. There’s a cool balcony for WiFi and it is fast.

4.Retro café Fjørðoy
Retro café Fjørðoy, which is downstairs is right on your doorstep here and is one of the most popular cafes in the Faroe Islands. Offering a vintage feel, atmosphere wise with its old school charm and a tasty modern local menu to keep your stomach satisfied.

5.Breakfast
Breakfast is included in the price and as well as this, tea and coffee are available all day. The breakfast varies and ours included fruit, vegetables, meat, eggs, juice and bread. A perfect start for the day as we headed hiking.

6.Cosy Rooms
The Guesthouse Hugo offers cosy, comfortable rooms. My room was fresh, clean and pristine with a harbourside view, WiFi, TV, desk and settee.

In addition to these five things, there is tourist information here, a fully equipped self-catering kitchen, use of ironing board, laundry facilities available, board games and binoculars for bird watchers. Alcoholic drinks are also available. This village has only a few places that sell alcohol including the petrol station and the Hotel Vagar.

Hello! Nice blog and nice review.
Do you know if there are bicycles to rent at Guesthouse Hugo?
I’m planning to cicle from there until Gasadalur. I read that you booked a taxi from there and costs 14 pounds. Just a question how do you find this taxi driver?
Hugs From Brazil.
Hi Nei,
Thanks for the comment. I didn’t see any bicycles to rent but you can always ask. It’s a small village. I asked one of the locals to find me a taxi driver. I don’t speak Faroese but a few of them spoke good English and I was able to get to where I wanted. Enjoy your trip to the Faroe Islands! Safe travels. Jonny
